The water utility in Voznesensk has expanded its solar power station capacity sevenfold over five years. In 2020, EcoClub, together with the city council and the water utility, installed a solar power station with a capacity of 50 kW. This was part of our project “Promoting Sustainable Energy Solutions in Communities”, supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The solar power station only covered 10% of the energy needs of the enterprise. Now, the community has expanded the station’s capacity to 350 kW and does not plan to stop there.
Funding for the expansion of the solar power station was provided from the city budget. Denys Kymii, former deputy mayor of Voznesensk who supported the launch of the project, noted:
“We plan to double the use of renewable energy in the future, and the city is also implementing a number of energy efficiency projects. Voznesensk has extensive practical experience in implementing clean energy projects, so the community is always happy to host field meetings of working groups or educational visits for communities — they are always welcome!”
Providing the water utility with its own solar energy has several advantages. It allows for cost savings and, most importantly, makes water supply significantly more reliable, which is crucial for residents, especially during wartime.
The community is not stopping there and plans to add another 350 kW for the wastewater treatment facilities. This will not only significantly save costs on energy payments but also improve the energy resilience of the community.
