Ecodia Held the Climate Media School: How to Talk About Climate Change Simply and Effectively

Ecodia conducted a Climate Media School on March 27-28 for experts working on climate change issues. The aim of the event was to enhance professionals’ ability to speak about this topic in the media.

During the two days, participants worked with Ukrainian experts, including climatologists, meteorologists, and media experts. The first day focused on strengthening knowledge about climate change, the relationship between climate change and weather, the impact of the full-scale war on climate, and the manifestations of climate change in Ukraine. On the second day, participants gained practical skills in effective communication with journalists, preparation of expert comments, working with various media formats, and public speaking.

Among the speakers at the media school were:

As a result of the Climate Media School, a guide on climate literacy will be created—a practical tool for journalists, which will contain brief and clear explanations of key topics about climate change and help understand which experts to contact for comments.

“In the context of climate change, it is extremely important for experts to not only research the problems but also to be able to explain them qualitatively to society. We see a great demand for clear communication: people want to know why climate change is occurring, what it means for their lives, and what everyone can do to change the situation for the better. That is why Ecodia organized this school and we will continue to develop a community of experts who are ready to actively and clearly communicate climate change to a broad audience,” said Vasylina Belio, head of the climate department at Ecodia NGO.
